Graduate Programs: IMPRS-PM and IMPRS-PL

Our Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) hosts two graduate programs within the framework of International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS): the IMPRS Physics of Light (PL) and the IMPRS Physics and Medicine (PM). Both programs are based on a collaboration with the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).

IMPRS-PL is our flagship program that has existed for more than 15 years. Admissions are given for a master’s program to Students with a bachelor degree, who can then proceed toward a PhD project inside the IMPRS program. Alternatively, students with a recognized master’s degree are eligible to apply to a PhD program directly. Possible research projects are defined by the IMPRS principal investigators at MPL and FAU. Successful master’s students receive a stipend (approx. 1000€/month) for up to two years from the IMPRS program. Doctoral students receive a salary from their respective research groups.

IMPRS-PM is our highly innovative new program at the interface of physics and fundamental research in medicine. IMPRS-PM is hosted by the Max-Planck Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM), which is a joint research center run by MPL, FAU and FAU University Hospital.

Admission: In both programs, we process applications from entering master’s students in two rounds with deadlines on January 15th and May 31st for the academic year starting in the following October. Decisions are communicated by March 1st and July 1st, respectively.

Students with a master’s degree who are interested in pursuing a PhD within IMPRS can apply and start at any time during the year.
