The lab welcomes María Gestal as new PhD student

María holds an MSc in Biomedical Sciences from Leiden University. During her Master’s training, she gained international research experience in infectious diseases at EMBL Barcelona and in metabolism at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, where she continued working as a research assistant for one year after completing her degree. She is now joining the lab as a PhD student, with research interests focused on malaria pathogenesis, vector-borne and tropical diseases, translational research, and global health.

Outside the lab, María enjoys wildlife photography, hiking, strength training, and baking—an interest that runs in her family. She loves seeking out sunny spots and spending time with her dog, especially at the beach, which considers her place of calm.
