Lab Manager (m/w/d)

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg - Institute of Medical Physics and Microtissue Engineering

Your Workplace

The Institute of Medical Physics and Microtissue Engineering at the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), located at the new Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin in Erlangen, offers the opportunity to work in an international, interdisciplinary team with state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure. The Institute, which is led by Prof Dr Kristian Franze, investigates how mechanical signals contribute to the development and regeneration of the nervous system. Using innovative methods such as atomic force microscopy and traction force microscopy, it investigates how neurons integrate cellular forces and tissue stiffness with known chemical signals. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the Institute's wet labs.

Your Tasks

  • Shared responsibility for all biological safety-related issues for all laboratories at the institute, including application, implementation, and documentation, ensuring compliance with quality standards, maintenance of safety data sheets (MSDS), proper labeling of hazardous materials, safety instructions, coordination of inspections, and adherence to university and external regulations
  • Ensuring the smooth operation of ongoing research projects, including monitoring stock levels to prevent shortages, ordering consumables, managing the disposal of hazardous waste and chemical inventory, and ensuring accurate tracking of samples
  • Responsibility for developing and ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in all wet laboratory areas, including the development of laboratory policies and procedures
  • Primary responsibility for the procurement, care, and maintenance of all equipment in the institute’s wet laboratories, providing technical support to researchers, calibrating equipment, managing the online booking calendar, and maintaining equipment documentation
  • Conducting inductions and training sessions for laboratory staff and collaborators in the wet laboratories

Your Profile

  • Completed university degree (Bachelor/Diploma [FH]) in Biology, Chemistry, or a comparable natural science field
  • Experience of working in a biological or biochemical laboratory
  • Experience with molecular biological methods is desirable
  • Experience with laboratory management is an advantage
  • Knowledge of current security standards (incl. corresponding certificates) is a plus
