Markéta Kubánková honored with “For Women in Science” award
Markéta Kubánková from the Guck Division at Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light / Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin is one of four outstanding young female scientists to be honored with this year's “For Women in Science” award.
“The world needs science – and science needs women” is the core message of the L'Oréal Foundation, the German UNESCO Commission and the German Humboldt Network, which present the prestigious awards, worth 25,000 euros each, to four female scientists each year. Dr. Markéta Kubánková from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, who is conducting research in the “Physics of the Cell” department under Prof. Jochen Guck, is being honored for her insights into the mechanical properties of cells and how measuring there changes in diseases such as COVID-19 and colon cancer can be used in future for new and faster diagnostic methods.
About the funding program
The proportion of women in science in Germany has increased in recent years – albeit from a very low level. Compared to the rest of Europe, the proportion of women in science in this country remains one of the lowest and, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, is below 30 percent. The gender ratio has hardly changed at all in the past decade.
The “For Women in Science” program addresses this issue by supporting young female researchers at a key point in their careers, increasing their visibility and drawing attention to ongoing structural inequalities. Through financial support and an international network, the award winners are given the opportunity to advance their research and at the same time become role models for the next generation of female scientists.
